Apples !

Miss Leung's Grade 3 class is organizing a food drive for RHPS!  Two representatives from her class came to talk to us on Friday.  They explained that there are lots of people who need help buying food in York Region and that we can help!   This opportunity is a perfect example to talk to our students about empathy and giving to others who are not as fortunate as ourselves during the holiday season.  Please send any non-perishable food items to school with your child to school before Friday, December 21.


The PRIDE ASSEMBLY focusing on EMPATHY for December is Wednesday, December 20 at 11:40a.m. and parents are welcome to join!

 Our Food Inquiry continues!  This week, students investigated different kinds of apples.  They noticed that they were different colours and shapes.  Together we asked, "Why are apples different colours?"  Next week we will do some research to discover the answer!

This week in math, we introduced patterning to the students.  They have been creating patterns in class and noticing them in our daily environment as well!  The Full Day Early Learning Curriculum overall expectation is:

P4: explore, recognize, describe, and create patterns, using a variety of materials in different contexts

On Friday, Andrea Beck a best-selling, Canadian author came to visit our Kindergarten and Grade 1's at Rick Hansen Public School.  She read us one of her popular Elliot the Moose stories and described to us how she writes stories and draws pictures!

Thanks to Mrs. Legros and Mr. Yoshida who have organized our Arts program.  Andrea Beck's visit was one of the first performances our students will get to be a part of!

Eco School!

Our school is a proud Eco School!  Mrs. Lacroix, Mr. Martyn and Ms. Gray along with a student committee from many different grades have been working very hard at RHPS to make our school as eco-friendly as possible!  

Green Bin award, Garbage Bin award and Recycling award!

A big part of our Eco-School initiative is how effectively our students can use our green bin, recycle bin and garbage bin.  The Kindergarten's are becoming independent when throwing out different wrappers from their snacks, materials they use in class, etc. 

We learned on Friday our class won 3 awards for being responsible about sorting and ensuring the proper waste goes in the right bin!

Way to go Kindergarten!!!

Arts Program

Kindergarten's are hosting this month's PRIDE Assembly on "Honesty" tomorrow, Tuesday, November 27, 2012!  Please join us at 11:40am for a few performances from the Kindergarten classes!

We are so lucky at Rick Hansen Public School to have an amazing Arts program that will run throughout the year!  If you have not sent in the permission form and the $30 program fee, please do as soon as possible. 

Our first program will be this Friday, November 30 when Andrea Beck a popular author and illustrator will visit RHPS to read to our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students!

On Friday, Andrea Beck is selling some of her books that have been signed by her!  If you would like an order form, please print this attachment off and send your request to school with your child.   For every 10 books our students buy, 1 will be donated to our library. 

Please please send a note to school with your child if you would like to purchase a copy of one of her signed books and I will send the order form hom in your child's mailbag.

 We continue to talk about 2-d shapes !  We have been making pictures with different materials we can find around our room.

J.L. (JK) put pattern blocks over top of a picture to create a car.

We're Going on a Shape Hunt

We continue to talk about shapes!  This week we went on a shape hunt around the school to see how many rectangles, circles, squares and triangles we could find.  We discovered Rick Hansen Public School is full of shapes!

Every time we saw a shape, we made a 'tick' in our shape table!

Today, we conferenced with Miss Robertson to talk about each shape and what shape we saw the most of and the least of.  

 Last week we did bubble art with food colouring.  This week we cut our art into different shapes.  Some of our SK's even made signs to label each shape!
