Arts Program

Kindergarten's are hosting this month's PRIDE Assembly on "Honesty" tomorrow, Tuesday, November 27, 2012!  Please join us at 11:40am for a few performances from the Kindergarten classes!

We are so lucky at Rick Hansen Public School to have an amazing Arts program that will run throughout the year!  If you have not sent in the permission form and the $30 program fee, please do as soon as possible.

Our first program will be this Friday, November 30 when Andrea Beck a popular author and illustrator will visit RHPS to read to our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students!

On Friday, Andrea Beck is selling some of her books that have been signed by her!  If you would like an order form, please print this attachment off and send your request to school with your child.   For every 10 books our students buy, 1 will be donated to our library.

Please please send a note to school with your child if you would like to purchase a copy of one of her signed books and I will send the order form hom in your child's mailbag.

You can access this link for activities and print outs too!

We're Going on a Shape Hunt

We continue to talk about shapes!  This week we went on a shape hunt around the school to see how many rectangles, circles, squares and triangles we could find.  We discovered Rick Hansen Public School is full of shapes!

Finding shapes in the gym!

Mrs. Lynn's class did this shape art! There were all sorts of shapes!

This poppy has a circle in the middle!
This rocketship in Mr.s Lynn's class had a triangle, circle, square and rectangle all in one structure!

So many shapes outside!  The roofs look like triangles!

Every time we saw a shape, we made a 'tick' in our shape table!

Today, we conferenced with Miss Robertson to talk about each shape and what shape we saw the most of and the least of.

Last week we did bubble art with food colouring.  This week we cut our art into different shapes.  Some of our SK's even made signs to label each shape!

REMEMBER

Portfolios have been sent home today!  Portfolios are a way for you to view your child's progress and some things your child has been doing at school.
You may notice some work that has been stapled into your duotang, this to enable you to look at the front and back of their work (often there is writing on the back!)
**It is very important Mrs. Taebpour and I get the portfolios back, as we are sending them home throughout the year.  Please talk with your child about their portfolio and send it back to school on Monday.

Remembrance Day

Rick Hansen PS recognized Remembrance Day today with an assembly.  Different classes presented throughout to remember soldiers who fought and died in war so we can be safe.  We also recognized those serving in our Candian Armed Forces today.  Everyone student at the school wrote a postcard for a soldier and put it in a mailbox.  Next week they will be mailed out to different Canadian troops across the world.  We wanted to let the men and women who are serving for Canada know how special and important they are.

The Kindergarten students contributed wreaths made from tissue paper poppies for our assembly.  We learned that poppies grew in Flanders Fields where soldiers were laid to rest during the War.  People wear a poppy on their shirt to remember.

All of the Kindergarten classes did an excellent job attentive listening and showing respect to other classes that presented during the assembly.  Well done!

2-d shapes

We have been learning about 2-D shapes!  Take a look at some of the investigating that has been taking place in our class.

Can you make any shapes at home using simple materials?  If you can, bring them to school to show us!
D.V. - I made a square with a geoboard!

A.M. made different shapes using triangle blocks from our building area!

Transportation Inquiry
Our transportation inquiry is coming to an end.  Next week we will be writing about what each student thinks is the most important kind of transportation.  This week we have been discussing different answers from students and were excited to hear their authentic answers.

While you are in our classroom for an Observation (JK) or Interview (SK) during the week of November 19-23 you will be invited to explore our Transportation Inquiry binder.  We are so excited to show it to you!

Technology!

Look at us using the Smartboard and Ipads to enhance our learning!

Difference Makers

This week, Ms. King challenged each class at our school to decorate a pumpkin as a "difference maker." Our class thought really hard about this task, our first ideas included a scary face and a vampire!  We challenged the students to think about someone or something that helps people or does something that makes our world a better place.

After reading,  The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, the JK's and SK's decided a tree was a difference maker because a tree is so giving!  A tree gives us leaves, shade, apples and branches to climb and swing on.  The students also knew that trees give us paper and fresh air.  Tree's are definitely big difference makers in our world!

Take a look below at how we decorated our pumpkin!  Mrs. Taebpour had a great idea to roast the pumpkin seeds to create the tree.  The students helped glue them on!

Mrs. Lynn and Mrs. Mugford's class won the pumpkin decorating contest by dressing their pumpkin up as Clifford!  They are lucky to win the prize of picking out a book for our library!
